Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of self-esteem on social appearance anxiety among female university students, as well as the mediating role of body satisfaction and attitude towards sports in this relationship. Data from 396 female participants were analyzed using structural equation modeling and Hayes PROCESS Model 4. The findings indicate a strong negative relationship between self-esteem and social appearance anxiety (r = -0.612, p < .01). Self-esteem positively influences body satisfaction (B = 0.1917, p < .001), and body satisfaction negatively predicts social appearance anxiety (B = -0.5233, p < .001). Accordingly, body satisfaction was found to play a significant mediating role (indirect effect B = -0.1003, 95% CI [-0.1440, -0.0596]), whereas the mediating effect of attitude towards sports was not statistically significant (B = 0.0003, 95% CI [-0.0116, 0.0126]). The model explains 41.9% of the variance in social appearance anxiety. These results highlight the critical role of self-esteem and body satisfaction in reducing social appearance anxiety, suggesting intervention programs for university women should target these dimensions.
