Abstract

Aim: This study aims to examine the attitudes of Faculty of Sports Sciences students toward seeking professional psychological help in terms of various variables such as gender, economic status, grade level, academic achievement, and years of sports experience, and to determine the predictive power of these variables on attitudes. Method: The general survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. The sample consists of 179 (82 female, 97 male) students determined by the convenience sampling method. Data were collected using the "Personal Information Form" and the "Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale-Short Form (ASPH-S)". Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple linear regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: The results showed that female students had significantly more positive attitudes toward seeking help than male students (p < .001). It was found that students who perceived their economic status as "sufficient" had significantly higher attitude scores than other groups (p < .001). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that gender, economic status, and years of sports experience explained 27.6% of the total variance in help-seeking attitudes [F(7, 171) = 9.336, p < .001]. The most striking finding of the study is that as the years of sports experience increase, the attitude toward seeking help decreases significantly in a negative direction (β = -.20, p = .012). Conclusion: The results indicate that gender and economic well-being positively predict help-seeking attitudes, while years of sports experience predict them negatively. It is thought that the perception of "athletic identity foreclosure" and "toxic grit" that develops as sports experience increases creates a barrier to seeking professional help.
