Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the levels of beliefs toward the physical education and sports teaching profession among students enrolled in the Pedagogical Formation Certificate Program in the Faculty of Sports Sciences and students in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching (PEST). The study group consisted of 416 volunteer students studying at the Faculty of Sports Sciences of Hitit University. The participants were selected from the departments of Coaching Education, Sports Management, Recreation, and PEST, allowing the effects of different program types on professional beliefs to be examined comparatively. Data were collected using a personal information form developed by the researchers and the “Belief Scale Towards the Physical Education and Sports Teaching Profession” developed by Doğru et al. (2019). The scale consists of two sub-dimensions: “Love for the Profession” and “Value of Physical Education and Sports.” Since the assumption of normality was not met, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, and Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons were used in the data analysis. The findings revealed significant differences among departments in both sub-dimensions. It was determined that PEST students had higher scores than the other groups in both sub-dimensions. In addition, a considerable proportion of the students in the formation group stated that they were considering becoming teachers, that the formation program contributed to their professional development, and that it positively influenced their perspectives on physical education teaching. As a result, it can be concluded that beliefs toward the teaching profession differ according to program type, and that undergraduate education directly focused on teacher preparation supports the development of professional beliefs more strongly.
