Abstract
Structures reflecting the aesthetic and technical advancement of civilizations can be regarded not only as examples of tangible cultural heritage, but also as carriers of intangible cultural heritage, due to the legends associated with them. Although Legends are generally given limited attention in scientific publications, they often overshadow the architectural qualities of these structures in public perception. Among architectural legends, the motif of human sacrifice has spread across a vast geographical area extending from Europe to South Asia, from the Balkans to Anatolia. Human sacrifice legends, which are mostly observed in bridges, castles and, to a lesser extent, in structures such as monasteries and mosques, have been reflected in ballads and have become an important element of cultural heritage by being transmitted through language. This study approaches architectural works from a different perspective by examining the myth of human sacrifice found across different parts of the world within the context of various types of structures in Anatolia and the Balkans. It also analyses the evolution of this myth in structures built in different periods and distant locations, as well as its relationship with different types of structures through both its common features and its changing characteristics.
