Abstract

This study examines the control structures in Old Anatolian Turkish in comparison with Standard Turkish and explores their historical development. Control structures are formed through a predicate in a coordinate clause that allows a control relation, along with a subordinate clause whose subject is controlled by an argument of the coordinate clause. The empirical information from the Old Anatolian period show that some coordinate predicates that allow control relations in Old Anatolian Turkish do not allow for such a relation in Standard Turkish. Although some predicates allow control in both periods, there are clear differences in the case, suffixes attached to the control (subordinate) clauses and the controller argument of the coordinate clause that binds the subordinate subject. In addition, although it appears that the predicates that allow control generally belong to similar semantic categories, the findings show that there is a significant difference with respect to the nominalizer suffixes that form the control clauses. The only nominalizer used to form control clauses in Old Anatolian Turkish is -mAK and this suffix occurs in two variants.
