Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the levels of knowledge and practices regarding COVID-19 and attitudes towards vaccination among primary school teachers in Karbala, Iraq. Method: This descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out with 310 teachers working across 17 different educational institutions in Karbala city between November 15, 2022, and May 15, 2023. Data were collected using a sociodemographic characteristics form and a questionnaire on knowledge and practices regarding COVID-19. For the comparison of groups, the independent t-test was used for continuous variables with normal distribution, and the Mann-Whitney U test was used for those not normally distributed. A p-value below 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between teachers' reasons for not getting vaccinated and their willingness to get vaccinated in the future (p < 0.05). When the relationship between teachers who stated "I do not trust the manufacturers" and those considering whether or not to get vaccinated in the future was examined, a significant difference was observed (p = 0.006). Conclusion: COVID-19 rapidly evolved into a global pandemic threatening public health. Personal hygiene practices, vaccination, and social isolation measures are crucial in the effective management of the disease. Providing education about the pandemic, primarily to teachers and all individuals, by healthcare professionals could positively contribute to the implementation of protective public health practices.
