Abstract

Sounds form part of the identity of spaces and are defined as a component of the physical environment. While geological and structural studies have been conducted specifically on underground cities in the literature, there is a lack of research on interior acoustics, which is an important aspect of the physical environment. However, beyond their visual identity, underground cities also form an important part of spatial memory with their acoustic properties, making them important subjects for research. In this context, the Derinkuyu Underground City in the Cappadocia region offers a unique field of research from an auditory perspective, with both its historical and spatial characteristics. This study examines the acoustic identity of Derinkuyu with a multidimensional approach and presents the preliminary findings of a field study conducted as part of a doctoral thesis. In the study, three different interior space typologies within this eight-story underground complex were analyzed in terms of architecture, measurement, and experience. Through reverberation time measurements and auditory observations conducted in the field, the effect of spatial volume, and functional use on sound perception was evaluated. The findings reveal that Derinkuyu should be considered not only as a visual but also as an auditory cultural heritage site. In this regard, the role of acoustics in spatial identity is emphasized, and the necessity of considering the auditory environment in the preservation of historical structures is highlighted.
