Abstract

Since the earliest periods of human history, people have attributed human-like emotions, thoughts, and intentions to nature and surrounding entities in an attempt to make sense of them. This tendency, referred to as “anthropomorphism” in the literature, is widely discussed across cognitive psychology and cultural anthropology. Anthropomorphism is observed not only in mythological figures or animals but also in objects, machines, and—more recently—in artificial intelligence systems and robotic technologies. An examination of the historical development of anthropomorphic tendencies reveals their earliest manifestations in the attribution of human traits to animals. Cultural practices such as totemism, animal mythology, emotional bonds with domesticated animals, and fairy tale characters all reflect this inclination. From the mid-20th century onward, anthropomorphic perceptions began to emerge toward technological devices; in particular, users started to perceive computers as entities that could “understand” or “respond.” Today, the development of AI-powered systems and humanoid robots has brought both the technical and ethical dimensions of anthropomorphism to the forefront. Especially in domains such as facial recognition, voice assistants, natural language processing, and behavioral responses, the acquisition of human-like abilities by AI systems has directly shaped user perceptions. Increasingly, people approach technological systems with empathy, engage with them socially, and evaluate them as if they possess a “personality.” This review article traces the evolution of the concept from its historical origins to its contemporary technological reflections. It examines the cognitive foundations, cultural functions, and technological adaptations of anthropomorphism, while also addressing the societal implications of AI and robotic technologies. Furthermore, it opens a discussion on the potential consequences of this tendency in areas such as interpersonal communication, loneliness, technology addiction, and ethical decision-making. In conclusion, anthropomorphism is not merely a perceptual mode of the past but a fundamental tendency shaping the technological society of the future. Accordingly, research on human-machine interaction must take into account the influence of anthropomorphic perceptions in both technological design and social policy.
