Abstract
The rapid development of digital communication technologies and the centrality of social media in everyday life have prompted a renewed discussion of privacy at both societal and individual levels. The interaction-oriented structure of Web 2.0 has transformed individuals from mere content consumers into active producers, increasing the visibility of private spaces and blurring the boundaries of the public–private distinction established in modern societies. The study discusses how the visibility, validation, desirability, popularity, and interaction opportunities offered by social media create a basis for the voluntary erosion of privacy. It also examines how social media generates new public spheres, bringing together individuals from different socio-cultural backgrounds within the same digital space, and how this process collectively reshapes the boundaries of privacy. The scope of this study includes a reassessment of the three dimensions of privacy -spatial, personal, and informational- within the context of social media. This study focuses on a sociological assessment of the effects of social media on privacy and the transformation of privacy within its socio-cultural context. Ultimately, it demonstrates that in an increasingly digitalized society, privacy has ceased to be a fixed domain and has instead become a negotiated, flexible, and often voluntarily violated practice. The study aims to contribute to the literature by offering a theoretical discussion based on a comprehensive review of existing research on the impacts of social media on privacy.
