Abstract
Interior architecture education in Türkiye has rapidly expanded since its institutionalization in the second half of the twentieth century, becoming a widely established discipline across both state and foundation universities. This study examines the academic staff structure of 92 Interior Architecture and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design programs actively admitting students as of 2025 and evaluates the current situation within the framework of the criteria established by the Association for Accreditation of Design and Planning (TAPLAK). The research adopts a mixed-method design based on a full-count (census) approach. Data were collected through document analysis using YÖK Atlas and official university websites. Quantitative data were analyzed through frequency and percentage distributions, while qualitative evaluation was conducted through interpretation based on relevant literature and accreditation criteria. Reliability was ensured by using only official and verifiable sources. The analysis of 761 academic staff members (299 teaching staff and 462 faculty members) reveals that 41% of faculty members graduated from interior architecture, 44% from architecture, and 15% from other disciplines. However, the absence of faculty members with undergraduate degrees in interior architecture in 18 universities, as well as the presence of only doctoral-level specialization in some institutions, indicates significant shortcomings in terms of TAPLAK accreditation criteria. In conclusion, while interdisciplinary diversity contributes to the enrichment of education, increasing the proportion of faculty with interior architecture backgrounds is essential for maintaining disciplinary identity. The adoption of accreditation principles and the alignment of academic structures with these standards are crucial for strengthening the quality of interior architecture education in Türkiye.
