Abstract

This study aims to examine the structural governance processes in global football and their psychological impacts, with a particular focus on the role of institutional structures in the failures of Türkiye football. The research was designed using a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative data (financial statements, infrastructure statistics, club reports) with qualitative data (literature review, academic articles, theses, and official reports) to conduct a comprehensive analysis. Examples of countries with similar institutional organization of football to Türkiye, namely Germany, Brazil, USA and Japan, were comparatively examined and successful management models were examined assuming that financial sustainability and infrastructure investments could be the main determinants of institutional success. The findings indicate that football clubs in Türkiye face institutional challenges such as financial indiscipline, lack of strategic planning, deficiencies in infrastructure and youth development, legal and autonomy issues, and political interventions. These structural shortcomings produce psychological effects on players, managers, and supporters, including loss of trust, anger, lack of belonging, and social polarization. The results demonstrate that the institutional problems in Türkiye football largely parallel the failure factors identified in the literature and support the necessity for systematic reforms.
