Abstract

This study examines issues such as identity loss, alienation, and loneliness that have emerged as a consequence of modern society through the films of Roy Andersson. In this context, by evaluating the alienating effects of modern society on the individual through Andersson's cinematography, the study aims to demonstrate the role of art in reflecting loneliness and the search for meaning. Another objective of the study is to confront the modern individual with their own reality through Andersson's films and encourage critical inquiry into this condition. According to Roy Andersson, the individual who has become lonely in capitalist modern societies has experienced death. Here, the concept of death is not a biological end but rather the result of the severance of social relationships, leading to the individual's loneliness and loss of a sense of belonging. The scope of the study, which adopts a qualitative method, is limited to Roy Andersson’s "Living Trilogy," consisting of the films Songs from the Second Floor, You, the Living, and A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence. In these three films, Andersson portrays the individual's loneliness and the collapse of the social structure through absurd humor. This study concludes that Roy Andersson’s cinema presents the loneliness and alienation imposed on the individual by modern capitalist society as a universal human experience through visual and narrative elements.
