Abstract

Although the history of communication goes back to ancient times, communication science and communication technologies have become systematic fields mainly in the last century. Communication is essentially a process of encoding and decoding. Cinema is based on moving images, while photography is the freezing of a moment. Today, communicating and constructing meaning through photography has become increasingly important. With the rise of social media, the process of visual construction has become more visible and influential. In photography, power appears as a form of physical, psychological, or material gain. Throughout the history of photography, power has been documented through themes such as leaders of resistance, war scenes, and psychological dominance. Among the leading photographers in this field are Timothy H. O’Sullivan, Nadar, Alberto Korda, Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, and Platon. In this study, the visual works produced by these photographers within the framework of the concept of “power” were examined. Discourse analysis was conducted on cinematographic images, using the stages of description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment.
