Abstract

Studies on the perception of space and lifestyles of the ancient Turks living in the steppe in Central Asia have traditionally treated this area as a geographical region. The concepts of space and place have been institutionalized and sanctified over time in the thought system of the people living in this geography, regardless of their lifestyle. How the pre-Islamic Turkish Steppe nomads understanding of space, which is the subject of our study, is reflected in their way of life because of sensory and religious experiences is still an issue outside the main research focus. At the same time, we can observe that it takes place only within a geographical perception of space by leaving aside the philosophical aspect found between the concepts of space and nomadism in many studies carried out on the lifestyles of Turkish steppe nomads. This can occur in a way that ignores also the mystical, emotional, religious, and aesthetic perception of space, as well as the indigenous land equivalent of Turkic nomads. Therefore, this study aims to research how the environment is perceived symbolically, considering the reflection in the real-life environment while it contains many differences in natural habitats in the Turkic steppe nomadic worldview and the Mongols. At the same time, the aim of this study is to address how lived geography reveals two different perspectives on space and place.
