Abstract

Ernest Renan, who was among the most important French Orientalists of the second half of the 19th century, also as an anthropologist and philologist, devoted most of his career to explaining the phenomenon he called the "Semitic mind". While the Semitic race, embodied within the framework of the "Muslim-Arab" character, means an "incomplete" and "deficient" category for Renan, linguistic qualities are placed on the basis of this deficiency. According to Renan, the main reason for the Semitic backwardness from the Indo-European communities is the stable or opaque structure of their language and their entire cultural system, which does not allow diversity. On the other hand, although it is not well known, Renan is one of the founding figures of Phoenician archeology and anthropology in the modern period, and his visit to Lebanon, which he took on the assignment of the French emperor III. Napoleon in the 1860s, led to very important political results. Renan's work titled Mission de Phénicie, which includes his observations on the Christian communities in Lebanon, especially the Maronites, and his deductions about the Phoenicians, brings up a very important representation process that makes modern Lebanese thought possible. The approach that the Lebanese are descended from Phoenicians and have an exceptional national character, free from the Arab-Islamic (i.e. Semitic) cultural patterns around them, will form the core of Lebanese thought independent of Syria and the wider Arab political organization. In this study, first of all, Renan's general thoughts on Semitic anthropology and philology will be revealed, and then his Lebanese trip and Mission de Phénicie, which shaped territorial Lebanese nationalism, will be emphasized.
