Abstract

Th is article attempts to understand the household structure by diachronically examining a compound building complex consisting of separate structures, which was unearthed in the Chalcolithic layer of Gökçeada Uğurlu-Zeytinlik settlement dating to 5300 BC, together with the architectural order and in situ fi nds. Th e building complex consists of three separate multi-room residential units separated from each other by physical boundaries. Each room in these residential units has been examined in detail and it has been tried to obtain evidence about activities such as storage, food preparation, ritual, etc. While it is seen that activities such as food preparation and storage are carried out separately in residences, it is understood that only certain areas are used for ritual activities, some other activities such as cooking and production may have been carried out in open areas or in courtyards. A certain level of storage may have been carried out jointly. However, there are similar production techniques and consumption strategies based on the fi nds uncovered in the residential units. In addition, a room of one of the buildings is distinctly diff erent from the other buildings in terms of material density and the proportion of small fi nds. A human skull and a ritual pit were also found in this room. Th e compound building complex shows a community living in physical spaces independent of each other, but sharing certain areas for certain activities.
