Abstract

Experimental Archaeology is an approach for fi lling gaps in our knowledge about the past, which cannot be fi lled through other archaeological research methods. An archaeological experiment must always answer a specifi c research question through practically testing production, use and/or formation of material culture and/or archaeological features. In Experimental Archaeology, testing a hypothesis in direct reference to the archaeological record is the core activity because the information gained should be impossible to obtain from solely examining archaeological artefacts. Along similar lines, experimental archaeology is a combination of diff erent methods and techniques used to generate an interpretation of the past based on archaeological evidence. It is also a form of hands-on study based on questions about past human activity and behavior. Understanding is achieved through the action of reconstruction and recreation of environmental conditions, structures, tools, domestic objects, and so forth. In this regard, Experimental Archaeology studies have been carried out at Boncuklu Höyük since 2014 in order to build a house and experience domestic and outdoor practices on the basis of the knowledge about the Pre-Pottery Neolithic Period and data from excavations. Th e aim has been identifying the dynamics of the construction process and the acquisition, application and deposit areas of all architectural elements and their interactions with each other as a result of the studies. Additionally, how and to what extent the structural integrity of the experimental house and all the elements constituting its architecture are aff ected by the natural conditions are periodically observed.
