Abstract

Purpose: To compare IOP-lowering efficacy and safety of once-daily travoprost (Travatan®) and latanoprost (Xalatan©) in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OH).Methods: Hundred eyes of 50 patients with bilateral POAG and OH were conducted in the study. The patients received travoprost 0.004% once daily in one eye and latanoprost 0.005% once daily in the fellow eye. The patients were followed at least 3 months. During follow-up period, IOP measurements were performed and ocular complications were recorded. Results: The mean baseline IOP level was 26.34+2.81 mmHg in travoprost group and was 25.24+2.79 mmHg in latanoprost group. In travoprost group, mean IOP levels at week 2, month 1, 2 and 3 visits were 18.18+1.70 mmHg, 17.46±2.14 mmHg, 17.65±2.28 mmHg and 17.67±2.34 mmHg, respectively. The mean IOP levels in latanoprost group were 17.74±2.07 mmHg, 16.76±2.21 mmHg, 17.39±2.00 mmHg and 17.13±1.97 mmHg at the same control vi¬sits, respectively. The analysis revealed significant IOP reductions from baseline in both groups (p0.05). The most frequent ocular adverse event was hyperemia in both groups. Conclusion: This 3 mounth study showed that travoprost and latanoprost were similar in their IOP lowering efficacy and safety. The incidence of mild ocular hyperemia was slightly lo¬wer in latanoprost group but not statistically significant.
