Abstract

Evaluation of the imbalance between antioxidant activity and lipid peroxidation in preec-lamptic patients. The objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that maternal plasma lipid peroxidation products are increased and antioxidants are decreased in women with mild pre-eclampsia. Fasting venous plasma were collected from normal pregnant (n=16) and mild pre-eclamptic women (n=16). Plasma total antioxidant status and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were measured by colorimetric assay. Plasma maternal concentrations of total antioxidant status and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were not significantly different in pre-eclampsia as compared with normal pregnancy (p> 0.05). When the variables in the same groups were measured, we found a negative correlation between total antioxidant status and TBARS in the normal group (r= -0.60, p0.05). The findings in this study show that there is an imbalance between antioxidant defences and lipid peroxidation in preeclamptic patients.
