Abstract

In the Ottoman Empire, the hospital buildingactivities, which started with military hospitals, led to the establishment of new institutions andorganizations in terms of public health, especially in the context of epidemics, wars, migrations and the Tanzimat, as well as variouspublic services. During the reign of AbdülhamidII, hospitals were built by taking into account theunits needed in many parts of the country, especially in Istanbul, and developed by makingadditions to the existing ones. While doing allthis, layiha were requested by referring to theknowledge of experts in the field. It is possible tosee what was taken into consideration for theconstruction of a hospital in this period, based onthe manuscript presented to Abdulhamid II byDutch doctor Stécoulis. As stated in this layihadated 1883, it was stated that the public hospital, which was planned to be built in Nişantaşı orMaçka, could be put into service until the winterof 1884. But, it has not been determined that ahospital with these features was built in thisregion on and after this date. However, additionswere made to hospitals that were previouslyexisting in or near the specified regions, in linewith the needs, taking into account the financialconditions, as suggested by the layiha.

II. Abdülhamid Dönemi’nde, başta İstanbulolmak üzere ülkenin birçok yerinde ihtiyaç duyulanbirimler dikkate alınarak hastaneler inşa edilmiş,mevcut olanlara eklemeler yapılarak geliştirilmiştir.Bütün bunlar yapılırken alanında uzman kişilerinbilgisine başvurularak layihalar istenmiştir. Felemenkasıllı Doktor Stécoulis’in II.
