Abstract
This study examines Mustafa Fevzi b. Nu‘mân’s Şümûsü’s-Safâ fî Evsâfi’l-Mustafâ, published in 1331/1913, within the context of debates surrounding sīra writing and conceptions of the Prophet during the Second Constitutional Period. Its central research question is how Mustafa Fevzi, a Sufi poet affiliated with the Naqshbandī-Khālidī tradition, responded—through particular narrative and apologetic strategies—to the criticisms articulated in Dozy’s Târîh-i İslamiyet and by figures associated with Abdullah Cevdet and Kılıçzâde Hakkı. The study analyses the 1331/1913 printed edition in terms of its structure, selection of events, conception of the Prophet, narrative voice, modes of address, and polemical discourse; its findings are then compared with contemporary refutations and sīra texts. The analysis demonstrates that the work is not a complete and continuous sīra, but rather a poetic narrative of the Prophet organised around selected themes such as his birth, the Hijra, physical description (ḥilya), and personal characteristics (shamāʾil). Rather than systematically enumerating and refuting opposing views, Mustafa Fevzi sought to reinforce Muslim readers’ conception of the Prophet by portraying him through the concepts of prophethood, miracle, morality, reverence, and love. The author’s affiliation with the Naqshbandī-Khālidī tradition constitutes an important intellectual framework for understanding his preference for a narrative centred on manāqib, ḥilya, and shamāʾil. From this perspective, Şümûsü’s-Safâ represents a text in which classical forms of poetic sīra writing were re-employed within the print culture of the Second Constitutional Period to serve apologetic and spiritual-guidance functions.
