Abstract

Purpose: Aim of our study was to determine the effect of application of magnetotherapy and ultrasound on experimental pain in healthy individuals. Materials and methods: Forty healthy subjects (21 women and 19 men) with a mean age of 21.45±1.27 years were included in the study. Application of modalities and measurements were performed by different researchers in the study which was planned as a single-blinded study. Pain was assessed with pain threshold and pain tolerance from the radius distal tip. Pain measurements were performed before and after ultrasound and magnetotherapy application. Therapy applications were done at the volar side of the distal forearm in consecutive days without a regular order. Application of ultrasound was performed 5 minutes with full contact technique while magnetotherapy was applied 20 minutes with longitudinal positioning. Results: Application of ultrasound and magnetotherapy increased pain threshold and tolerance values significantly (p0.05). Conclusion: Ultrasound and magnetotherapy can be used to obtain analgesia in addition to tissue healing. Because there was no difference between the modalities from this aspect, choice between these modalities may rely on easy accessibility in the clinic.
