Abstract

Aim: Providing the dental laboratory with an accurate replication of the hard and soft tissues of a patient is essential for the succes of crown-bridge restorations. Because, the errors during impression taking are transmitted to the future steps as folded. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and errors of impressions before sent to laboratory for the fabrication of crown-bridge restoration. Material and Methods: One hundred forty crown-bridge restoration impressions taken by the clinical dental students in Department of Prosthodontics, Gazi University Dental Faculty were evaluated in the study. The impression technique and material used, tray type, and number of prepared unit were recorded for each impression. Data related to the errors and faults including the defects in material polymerization, retantion to tray, tissue contact by tray, crucial areas beyond tray borders, putty material exposure through the wash material, inadequate union of materials, retraction cords embedded in impressions, and air bubbles, voids, or tears along the margin were also documented for the impressions. Results: High frequency of the detectable errors were found in the putty material exposure through wash material (59.3%), voids or tears at finish line area (54.3%) and inadequate union of light bodied materials (39.3%). Conclusion: The study results suggest that any detectable errors during impression taking may affect the final restoration's succes on a large scale.
