Abstract

Aim: Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and. fibroblast growth factor (FGF) function in growth, differentiation and regeneration of variety of tissues including epithelium. Their presence in human odontogenic cysts and tumors has not been clarifiea yet. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of EGF and FGF in of odontogenic cysts and tumors. Material and Methods: Nine cases of dental follicle, sever follicular cysts and five ameloblastomas were stainec immunohistochemically with EGF and FGF antibodies. Tht presence and expression degree of EGF and FGF with evaluated by light microscope. Results: All lesions were positive with EGF but they showei variable staining intensity. FGF found positive in al ameloblastomas and follicular cysts but only 44% of denta follicle, with variable staining intensity. Conclusion: These data suggested that EGF plays a role in odontogenesis rather than pathogenesis of these lesions, while FGF might play a role also in pathogenesis of odontogeni cysts and tumors.
