Abstract

Aim: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate and compare the frequency of white spot formation on the labial surfaces of anterior teeth of patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances in England and Turkey. Subjects and Methods: The 74 patients were selected between the records of the patient treated by the same operator. Then the patients were divided to subgroups, as short (12-16 months) and long (20-25 months) treatment period, according to total treatment time. Frequency of white spot formation at the end of the treatment was decided on the colour slides and the comparisons between the groups were done by using Chi-square test. Results: There was no statistically significant differences between the patients treated in the both country (p=0.13). However, the frequency of white spot formation in the long treatment period was significantly higher than that for short treatment period (p=0.0002). Conclusion: The prolongation of the fixed orthodontic treatment has an increasing effect on the frequency of the white spot formation.
