Abstract

Both in the Arab Spring and Gezi Park protests we have witnessed football fan groups’, especially the Ultras’ emergence as crucial actors in social protests. In Egypt during the Battle of Camel and it’s after, and in Turkey, the fan groups contributed resistance through gathering and organizing dispersed and unorganized masses in clashes with the police forces. This study, through problematizing these unusual actors of social movements through making a comparison between Egyptian and Turkish cases. The article uses the conceptual tools provided by contentious politics approach and discusses political opportunities, accumulated contention, experience, and fan groups’ action repertoires. The article proposes that in Egypt case, in which conduits of democratic participation to politics is blocked, state violence is pervasive and street became the main space of dissent and protest, the fan groups, as experienced street fighters, become the powerful and persistent elements of social movements
