Abstract

Fluctuations in world maize prices can significantly affect import costs and price formation in maize-importing countries. As Türkiye is a net importer in the international maize market, understanding the extent to which changes in world maize prices are transmitted to the country's import unit values is of considerable importance. The study aims to examine the long-run relationship and price transmission between world maize prices and Türkiye's maize import unit value using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach. Annual data covering the period 1990–2024 are employed. The stationarity properties of the variables are examined using the Phillips–Perron unit root test, while the long-run relationship is investigated through the ARDL bounds testing approach. In addition, the robustness of the findings is assessed by incorporating a dummy variable representing the extraordinary market conditions of 2006, and the hypothesis of complete price transmission was evaluated using the Wald test. The empirical findings reveal the existence of a long-run cointegration relationship between world maize prices and Türkiye's maize import unit value. According to the final model, a 1% increase in world maize prices leads to an approximately 0.86% increase in Türkiye's maize import unit value in the long run. The error correction model indicates that approximately 73% of short-run disequilibria are corrected within the following period. Furthermore, the Wald test results fail to reject the hypothesis of complete long-run price transmission. Overall, the findings demonstrate that changes in world maize prices are a key determinant of Türkiye's maize import unit value and highlight the importance of monitoring international price movements in the formulation of agricultural and foreign trade policies.
