Abstract

This study examines the socio-demographic factors that influence household saving preferences in Türkiye. A multinomial logit model was used to analyse data from 3354 households with complete information in the Turkish Statistical Institute’s 2020 Household Budget Survey micro-dataset. Savings preferences were categorized into four groups: real estate, gold/foreign currency, bank accounts, and capital market instruments. The findings suggest that families with children are more likely to prefer real estate and capital market instruments, while families without children are less likely to choose gold or foreign currency and bank accounts. Spending amount did not significantly affect preferences for real estate or gold/foreign currency but increased the likelihood of choosing a bank account and decreased the likelihood of choosing capital market instruments. Tenants were more likely to prefer gold, foreign currency, bank accounts, and capital market instruments, while homeowners tended to prefer real estate. Those with private insurance preferred capital market instruments, while those without preferred real estate, gold, foreign currency, and bank accounts. As household size increased, the likelihood of choosing real estate or gold/foreign currency increased, while the likelihood of having a bank account decreased. These results are informative for policymakers.
