Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of socio-demographic factors on the desire of employed individuals in Türkiye to increase their working hours in order to earn more income. The data source used was the Micro Data Set of the Household Labor Force Survey conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute in 2023. The logit model was chosen as the data analysis method. According to the analysis results, there is a significant relationship between an individual's monthly income level and their desire to increase their working hours. While the desire to increase working hours decreases in middle-aged individuals compared to younger age groups, it was found to increase again in older age groups. It was determined that the desire to increase working hours is higher among women than men; however, it is lower among those working in the private sector compared to those working in the public sector. The desire to increase working hour’s decreases in all education groups compared to those who have not completed school; in technician, office, agricultural, artisan, operator, and unskilled professions compared to managerial professions; and among those who are unregistered compared to those who are registered. Since the desire to increase working hours is determined by many economic, social, and individual factors, revealing the effects of these variables is important for understanding labor market dynamics and individual economic behaviors.
