Abstract

This study assessed the spatial impacts of the wildfire that began in Karabük, Türkiye, on 23 July 2025 using Sentinel-2 imagery and Random Forest (RF) classification. NDVI and NBR were calculated for pre- and post-fire periods, together with dNDVI, dNBR, and RdNBR to characterize spectral changes. dNDVI represented vegetation change, while dNBR was used to map burn severity. Seven spectral predictors were incorporated into an RF model to distinguish burned from unburned areas. The reference dataset included 400 visually interpreted samples, equally divided between the two classes. To reduce spatial autocorrelation between training and test data, samples were partitioned using 2 × 2 km blocks, yielding 299 training and 101 test samples. The dNBR classification assigned 83.12% of the study area to the unburned/very low severity class, 8.40% to low severity, 4.38% to moderate-low severity, and 4.10% to the combined moderate-high/high severity class. RF achieved 96.04% overall accuracy and a Kappa coefficient of 0.920, with a 95% Wilson confidence interval of 90.26–98.45%. RdNBR (24.35%) and dNBR (23.12%) together accounted for 47.47% of total variable importance. These findings support the use of spectral change indices and spatially validated RF classification for identifying wildfire-affected areas. However, RF accuracy applies only to the binary burned/unburned classification; the dNBR severity classes were not validated against independent field observations.
