Abstract

This study aims to determine the spatial distribution and ecological strategies of plant taxa occurring in urban microhabitats in the 100. Yıl Neighborhood of Karabük, Türkiye. Based on systematic field surveys, a total of 103 plant taxa were identified and classified into four life forms: trees, shrubs, climbers, and herbaceous species. The ecological characteristics of the taxa were evaluated using Grime’s CSR (Competitor–Stress tolerant–Ruderal) ecological strategy framework. The spatial distribution of plant taxa was mapped using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and urban vegetation density was assessed through the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. The relationship between habitat types and plant life forms was tested using the Chi-square analysis, revealing a statistically significant association between the variables. In addition, the ecological structure of the study area was evaluated through a SWOT analysis in terms of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The findings indicate that ruderal and stress-tolerant taxa are dominant, with vegetation primarily concentrated in urban microhabitats such as roadsides, vacant lots, stream corridors, and parks. NDVI results were largely consistent with field observations. The study highlights the determining role of urban microhabitats in plant distribution and provides valuable insights for urban ecological planning and management.
