Abstract

The endemic species Helichrysum compactum Boiss., belonging to the family Asteraceae, was used as the plant material in this study. Plant samples were collected from two locations in Antalya, Türkiye (Alanya and Elmalı), during the 2024-2026 vegetation seasons at two phenological stages: pre-flowering and flowering. A total of 73 volatile compounds were identified in the samples from Alanya and Elmalı using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In the Alanya population, the major volatile compounds during the pre-flowering stage were thymol (13.27%), trans-caryophyllene (11.84%), and selina-3,7(11)-diene (6.54%). During the flowering stage, limonene (14.26%), α-pinene (13.49%), and p-cymene (8.63%) were identified as the predominant constituents. In the Elmalı population, trans-caryophyllene (29.15%), α-humulene (22.19%), and limonene (9.15%) were the major volatile compounds during the pre-flowering stage. During the flowering stage, trans-caryophyllene (30.99%), α-humulene (12.00%), and carvacrol (11.21%) were the predominant constituents. Cluster analysis was performed to statistically evaluate and compare the volatile compound profiles among the samples. The volatile compound composition of Helichrysum compactum Boiss. naturally occurring in two distinct habitats in the Antalya region of Türkiye (Alanya and Elmalı) was characterized across the two phenological stages. The volatile compound profiles were subsequently compared using cluster analysis, which classified the samples into eight distinct groups.
