Abstract

This study aimed to determine the occurrence frequency and functional uses of cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus L.) in rural home gardens (RHGs) in Rize and Trabzon provinces and, based on the findings, to evaluate its potential for planned agroforestry practices. Face-to-face surveys were conducted with the owners of 48 RHGs, including 22 in Rize and 26 in Trabzon. In addition, plant taxon diversity was documented through sketch mapping in five additional RHGs in each province. Thus, data from a total of 58 RHGs, comprising 27 in Rize and 31 in Trabzon, were evaluated. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics based on frequencies and percentages. A total of 69 woody climbing plant taxon were identified in the surveyed RHGs, and cherry laurel was recorded in 45 gardens, including 21 in Rize and 24 in Trabzon. The occurrence frequency of cherry laurel was 77.77% in Rize and 77.42% in Trabzon. The findings showed that cherry laurel serves multiple functions in RHGs, particularly for fruit production and as a windbreak, as well as for landscaping, soil conservation, and apicultural purposes. Its high occurrence frequency in both provinces and multifunctional use indicate that cherry laurel is a promising taxon for integration into planned agroforestry systems in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye. Accordingly, the planned cultivation of cherry laurel is considered potential to diversify production and support rural economies in the region.
