Abstract

Throughout the history of civilization, humanity's tool-making skills and desire to transform materials have been one of the defining dynamics of artistic periods, from the Paleolithic Age to the present day. The radical transition from the mechanical paradigms of the Industrial Revolution to the fluid and data-driven reality of the Digital Age has triggered a profound metamorphosis in the art of sculpture, whose existence is founded upon the physical resistance of matter and the laws of gravity. Although the symbiotic relationship between technology and art exhibits historical continuity, the advent of advanced 3D modeling software and additive manufacturing technologies marks the birth of a new ontological category defined as "digital sculpture." An assessment of the literature reveals a notable scarcity of studies that delve deeply into the intersection of the fine arts discipline and organic modeling tools, such as ZBrush, in contrast to CAD research focusing on industrial design. Indeed, existing literature largely reduces the issue to a level of technical proficiency; it falls short of discussing, within the context of aesthetic philosophy, how the transition from "pixel" to "pixol" technology transforms the cognitive and haptic relationship the artist establishes with the work. The proliferation of computer-aided manufacturing environments in the twenty-first century necessitates a reconsideration of sculpture not only in terms of technical possibilities but also through its historical ontological parameters such as mass, materiality, irreversibility, and spatial presence. This study aims to examine the transformation in the conditions of sculpture's existence brought about by ZBrush software's "digital clay" paradigm and layered manufacturing technologies (3D printing), within the context of artistic practices and theoretical discussions. Designed as qualitative research, the study employs document analysis and systematic literature review methods; within the scope of purposive sampling, the productions of Keith Brown, Kevin Mack, Adam Martinakis, Paul Higham, Scott Eaton, and Mariano Steiner are evaluated through descriptive and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that digital sculpture, rather than being a mere simulation of traditional sculpture, offers an "immaterial yet volumetric" experiential field thanks to pixol-based surface data density, reversible processes (undo), accelerated variation generation, and algorithmic/formal manipulation possibilities. The objectification of these digital forms in the physical world through 3D printing renders visible a new logic of materialization in the digital–physical transition, manifested through surface, layer traces, material behavior, and display regimes. Concurrently, the study discusses the potential risks of stylistic homogenization and technological determinism arising from the software's readymade aesthetics and interface constraints. Beyond merely identifying these tensions on a theoretical level, the study proposes a phased pedagogical model for integrating digital clay and layered manufacturing into sculpture education. The model comprises the following stages: (1) basic plastic formation, (2) form exploration with digital clay, (3) digital–physical transition (3D printing), (4) physical intervention and display, and (5) process-oriented assessment; it positions critical awareness, process documentation, and justification of decisions as learning outcomes alongside technical proficiency. In conclusion, the research suggests that digital sculpture establishes a hybrid ontology along the "data–matter" axis and that the academic legitimacy of this field can be reinforced through critically grounded educational models.
