Abstract

Traditional art history historiography tends to classify graphic design and cinema as isolated and ontologically distinct disciplines. Within this approach, graphic design is associated with static surface practices, whereas cinema is linked to the experience of temporal movement. However, this study contends that such a distinction constitutes an artificial boundary and argues that film history was significantly shaped by the translation of graphic design principles onto a temporal plane. The research examines how graphic conventions—such as the modular grid, typographic hierarchy, asymmetric composition, and photomontage—contributed to the formation of cinematographic narrative throughout the historical trajectory spanning from 1895 to 1960. Adopting a qualitative and interdisciplinary methodology, the study draws upon the intermediality framework of Bruhn and Gjelsvik (2018) and Elsaesser’s (2016) media archaeology approach. The analysis was conducted across the categories of composition, typography, frame-surface relationship, and montage-rhythm through a comparative reading of film frames alongside period posters and layouts. The scope of the inquiry encompasses a historical continuum extending from the 'tableau vivant' aesthetic of early cinema to the graphic decors of German Expressionism, and from the typographic montage understanding of Soviet Constructivism to the modernist title sequence designs of Saul Bass. The findings suggest that early cinema did not entirely sever ties with the traditions of static visual culture; rather, it restructured and adapted the formal strategies inherited from posters, illustrations, magazine layouts, and optical spectacle practices into its own visual language. Ultimately, the study proposes that evaluating the relationship between graphic design and cinema through processes of mutual remediation and reinterpretation provides a more explanatory framework than a unidirectional model of influence.
