Abstract

Throughout the history of cinema, the relationship between the human, technology, body, and identity has constituted one of the most significant fields of representational inquiry. Today, posthumanism enables a rethinking of these representations, transforming cinema into a space where posthuman subjectivities, technological bodies, and new modes of existence are questioned. Posthumanism can be defined as a philosophical movement that challenges anthropocentric thought systems and seeks to redefine the concept of the human beyond biological, technological, and cultural boundaries. It rejects the human’s superior position over nature, technology, and other living beings, repositioning humanity as part of a broader ecosystem and network. Posthumanist feminism, in turn, questions the patriarchal and biological constructions of the female body, emphasizing new forms of subjectivity emerging from the body’s interactions with technology and materiality. The aim of this study is to examine how the female body is represented in Advantageous (2015) and The Substance (2024) through the conceptual framework of posthumanist feminism, and to reveal how these representations suggest transformations in relation to technology, identity, and gender. The study conducts a thematic analysis of the two films within the frameworks of Donna Haraway’s cyborg theory, Rosi Braidotti’s notion of the posthuman subject, and Karen Barad’s agential realism. Advantageous explores the control of motherhood and the female body as a consumer object through technology, while The Substance addresses the ideals of beauty and the pressures of normative femininity. The findings indicate that in both films, the female body represents a space reconstructed beyond biological boundaries, continually positioned as a passive object under systemic and patriarchal gazes. However, this representation reveals that instead of fully realizing the liberatory potential of posthumanist feminism, the body becomes exposed to new forms of domination and control mechanisms.

Çalışma, Donna Haraway’in siborg kuramı, Rosi Braidotti’nin posthüman özne anlayışı ve Karen Barad’ın failci gerçekçiliği çerçevesinde iki filmin tematik çözümlemesini sunmaktadır.
