Abstract

This study aims to examine the mediating role of motivation to participate in physical activity (individual and environmental reasons) in the effect of social support on digital game addiction in adolescents. The research was conducted with a total of 501 high school students (53.1% female, 46.9% male) from three Anatolian High Schools, one Science High School, and one Sports High School in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Digital Game Addiction Scale (DGAS-7), the Social Support in Physical Activities Scale (total score), and the individual and environmental reasons subscales of the Motivation to Participate in Physical Activity Scale. Data were analyzed using Jamovi software; descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analyses were performed, followed by mediation analyses using the bootstrap method. The findings showed that social support had a significant and positive direct effect on digital game addiction (β = 0.231, p < .001). Additionally, social support positively predicted both individual reasons (β = 0.168, p = .001) and environmental reasons (β = 0.169, p = .002). The effect of individual reasons on digital game addiction was negative (β = −0.184, p = .003), while the effect of environmental reasons was positive (β = 0.216, p < .001). When the indirect effects were examined, the effect of social support on digital game addiction through individual reasons was negative and significant (β = −0.031, 95% CI [−0.075, −0.005]); and the indirect effect through environmental reasons was positive and significant (β = 0.037, 95% CI [0.008, 0.083]). The total effect was also positive and significant (β = 0.237, p < .001). These findings suggest that the impact of social support on digital game addiction may vary depending on the type of motivation it supports. While social support has a protective effect when it increases internalized (intrinsic) motivation, it can also increase the risk of addiction when it stimulates extrinsic motivation.
