Abstract

This study aimed to analyze swimming performances at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by examining differences between qualification performances and Olympic race results across competition stages, sex, and age-related patterns. The study was designed as a retrospective cross-sectional document analysis using publicly available secondary data from official World Aquatics and Paris 2024 records. The sample included 844 swimmers (387 women, 457 men) from 189 countries/NOCs; the mixed relay event was excluded. Differences between qualification performances and results in the heats, semifinals, and finals were analyzed separately for female and male swimmers. Age distributions of semifinalists and finalists were also compared, and country-level success, split-time profiles, and relay-order patterns were descriptively examined. Because the data did not meet normality assumptions, non-parametric tests were used, including the Friedman test with Wilcoxon Signed Rank post hoc comparisons and the Mann–Whitney U test (p < 0.05). The findings showed significant stage-based differences: swimmers generally performed slower than qualification standards in the heats but improved in the semifinals and finals. However, the pattern of qualification-to-competition differences was similar between female and male swimmers. Age distributions did not differ significantly between semifinalists and finalists or according to sex. These findings suggest that Olympic swimming progression is shaped more by competition stage, pacing demands, and race-specific strategy than by sex or age-related differences alone. The results provide practical benchmarks for coaching, race planning, and Olympic preparation.
