Abstract

Laser therapy in dentistry began in 1960 with Theodore Maiman’s invention of the first operational laser and has since undergone significant technological advancements. Initially limited to cavity preparation and hard tissue procedures, its early adoption was restricted by high costs and insufficient safety standards. The development of CO₂, Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, and diode lasers expanded clinical applications, with Er:YAG lasers becoming particularly preferred due to their minimal thermal effects. Improvements in wavelength and pulse modulation reduced tissue damage and enhanced patient comfort. Furthermore, the integration of laser systems with digital imaging technologies has significantly increased accuracy and efficacy in periodontal and implant treatments. Today, with the advent of portable, cost-effective, and safe laser systems, laser therapy has become an indispensable component of modern dental practice.
