Abstract
This study aims to examine how the concepts of retro marketing and collective memory are produced within advertisements from a semiotic perspective. The primary goal of the research is to reveal how retro marketing strategies intersect with collective memory and through which signs this intersection structures the meaning relations established with the consumer. The 70th Anniversary commercial by Arçelik, selected as the sample for analysis, emphasizes the brand’s institutional continuity from past to present, its emotional bond with consumers, and its innovative identity through visual, auditory, and linguistic signs. The character Çelik is positioned not only as a nostalgic symbol but also as a representative who humanizes modern technology and establishes an empathetic relationship with the viewer. The analysis shows that the advertisement reconstructs collective memory by evoking feelings of familiarity, trust, and belonging in the audience. Nostalgic elements from the past are integrated with contemporary technological signs, creating a narrative that supports the brand’s cultural continuity. The findings indicate that elements of retro marketing and collective memory function as strategic communication tools within branding processes. These strategies deepen the consumer’s connection with the brand at both individual and societal levels, while also highlighting that Arçelik is not merely a technology producer but a brand identity centered around human values and emotional resonance. Results obtained through semiotic analysis demonstrate that associating symbolic figures from the past with contemporary consumer experience creates a transformative impact on brand image. In this context, the strategic use of historical heritage by long-established brands is considered an important method for strengthening emotional and cultural bonds with consumers.
