Abstract

This article compared Agnès Varda’s Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) and Metin Erksan’s Time to Love (Sevmek Zamanı, 1965) to examine how 1960s urban modernization and visual culture shaped female subjectivity and the mediation of love through images. It showed that the decade’s star system, consumer culture, and reconfigured public spaces produced a regime of visibility that circulated and regulated the female body, transforming women’s self-perception. Using qualitative film analysis and close readings of selected scenes, the study focused on framing and mise-en-scène, performance, gaze direction, editing rhythms, and sound. The analysis demonstrated that mirrors, shop windows, reflections, and photographs functioned not as decorative motifs but as key sites where the female image was produced and contested. In Cléo from 5 to 7, real-time narration and Paris’s public soundscape exposed tensions between celebrity surface and embodied vulnerability, enabling the possibility of more reciprocal contact. In Time to Love, the repeated fixation on Meral’s photograph ritualized desire and suspended reciprocity within secluded spaces and arrested time. These findings clarified how each film organized struggles between being confined by the image and moving beyond it through distinct spatial and temporal regimes.
