Abstract

Background: Motivation plays a crucial role in the academic achievement, learning process, and professional development of nursing students. Objective: This study aimed to adapt “The Motivation for Nursing Student Scale” into Turkish and to examine its psychometric properties. Method: This methodological study was conducted with 333 undergraduate nursing students. Data were collected using the Student Identification Form and the Motivation for Nursing Student Scale. Language and content validity were assessed to determine validity, and construct validity was examined using confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, paired t-test, item–total correlations, Guttman split-half, Spearman–Brown coefficients, and Hotelling’s T² test. Results: The content validity index of the scale was 0.96. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the total scale was 0.78. The scale demonstrated temporal stability as indicated by significant test–retest results (p < 0.001). In addition, no response bias was detected (Hotelling’s T² = 842.218, p < 0.001), and the Spearman–Brown and Guttman split-half coefficients were above 0.70. In factor analysis, all factor loadings were above 0.30. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the model showed an acceptable fit to the data (GFI = 0.92, AGFI = 0.89, CFI = 0.90, TLI = 0.88, NFI = 0.85, IFI = 0.91, RMSEA = 0.061). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Motivation for Nursing Student Scale was found to be a valid and reliable measurement tool. It can be used to assess the academic motivation of nursing students. Keywords: Motivation, Nursing Students, Psychometrics, Validity, Reliability

Özet

Giriş: Motivasyon, hemşirelik öğrencilerinin akademik başarı, öğrenme süreci ve mesleki gelişimleri üzerinde belirleyici bir rol oynamaktadır. Amaç: Bu araştırma, hemşirelik öğrencilerinin akademik motivasyonlarını değerlendirmeye yönelik olarak geliştirilen “The Motivation for Nursing Student Scale” ölçeğini Türkçe’ye uyarlamayı ve psikometrik özelliklerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
