Abstract

Background: Skin cancer is a major public health problem worldwide. It is important to determine adolescents’ sun protection behaviors and develop protective behaviors to prevent skin cancer and sun-related skin problems that may occur in later life. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sun protection self-efficacy, decision balance perceptions, and sun protection behaviors of adolescents diagnosed with cancer (ADC), the factors affecting these behaviors, and the difference between the variables in ADC and their healthy peers. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional, and comparative study was conducted between December 2020 and December 2021 with 514 adolescents, including 230 adolescents were diagnosed with cancer and 284 healthy adolescents. The data were collected using the Identifying Information Form, The Sun Protection Stage of Change and Sunscreen Use Stage of Change, The Sun Protection Behavior Scale (SPBS), The Sun Protection Decisional Balance Scale (DBS) and The Sun Protection Self-Efficacy Scale (SES). Results : It was found that there was a difference between the mean scores of ADC and their healthy peers in stages of change in sun protection and sunscreen use, the total and subscale scores of SPBS and SES, and the mean scores of pros and cons dimensions of DBS for sun protection. Conclusions: The results of this study show that adolescents diagnosed with cancer have better sun protection behaviors than their healthy peers. It is recommended that healthcare providers implement sun protection programs for the development and continuity of primary and secondary prevention behaviors in prevention of skin cancer.
