Abstract

Background: Breast self-examination (BSE), although an important method for the early detection of breast cancer (BC), is reported to be associated with generally insufficient knowledge and practice levels among women. This situation highlights the need for effective and theoretically grounded educational interventions. Nurses utilize the Information–Motivation–Behavioral Skills (IMB) Model in the preservation and promotion of health and in fostering positive health behaviors. Objective: This study was planned to examine the effect of education based on the IMB Model on breast cancer prevention and breast self-examination among female nursing students. Method: This quasi-experimental study, designed as a single-group pretest–posttest, was conducted with 124 female students enrolled in the nursing department of a university. Data were collected between 1 October 2024 and 30 April 2025. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis, and normality was assessed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and McNemar’s chi-square test were used to compare pre- and post-intervention data. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Instruments used to assess IMB, and health outcomes included the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Knowledge Test, the Scale for Determining Factors Affecting Women’s Breast Cancer Prevention Behaviors, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the Health Perception Scale. Results: Following the training, statistically significant increases were observed in information levels regarding BC within the knowledge component; in attitude and motivation levels within the personal motivation component; and in self-efficacy and self-care scores within the behavioral skills component (p<0.001). Within the behavioral component, the percentage of students who performed BSE in the last month increased significantly compared to before the training, and within the health outcomes component, participants’ health perception scores increased statistically significantly (p<0.001). Conclusion: Education based on the IMB Model has positively improved female nursing students’ knowledge, motivation, behavioral skills, BSE behavior, and health perceptions regarding protection from BC and BSE. Education interventions based on this model can be effectively used by nurses to promote BSE among women. Keywords: Breast Self-Examination, Breast Cancer, Students, Nurses
