Abstract

Background: Surgical nursing care, a person-centered approach and the clinical decision-making process are key elements that determine the effectiveness of nursing practices. Therefore, examining nurses’ current status in these areas is of great importance. Aim: This study aimed to examine the relationship between person-centered perioperative nursing care practices and clinical decision-making levels among surgical nurses. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with a sample of 179 surgical nurses. Data were collected between May and June 2025 using the “Descriptive Characteristics Form,” the “Clinical Decision-Making in Nursing Scale (CDMNS),” and the “Person-Centered Perioperative Nursing Scale (PCPNS).” Data were gathered online through the snowball sampling method. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: Among the surgical nurses participating in the study, 89.9% were female, with a mean age of 30.63±6.12 years. The mean total score of the Clinical Decision-Making in Nursing Scale was 144.63±15.28, while the mean total score of the Person-Centered Perioperative Nursing Scale was 83.72±9.74. The findings indicate that surgical nurses have high levels of clinical decision-making and perform patient-centered perioperative nursing care practices at a high level. A statistically significant, positive, moderate correlation was found between the Clinical Decision Making Scale score and the Person-Centred Perioperative Nursing Scale score (r=0,492; p<0,001). Conclusion: The study revealed that as surgical nurses’ levels of clinical decision-making increased, they were more likely to engage in higher levels of person-centered perioperative nursing care practices. In this context, it is recommended that in-service training and institutional policies be developed to enhance both clinical decision-making skills and person-centered perioperative care practices among surgical nurses.
