Abstract
This study examines Muhammad Qasim Nânautvî’s political stance against British colonial rule in the 19. century Hind region within its historical context. The central argument is that, following his experience of direct resistance in 1857, Nânautvî developed a strategy that did not aim at political power in a direct manner, but instead produced political outcomes through the construction of theological legitimacy and institutional mobilisation. The article demonstrates Nânautvî’s engagement with the atmosphere of resistance during the Sepoy Uprising and the Battle of Shamli, the post-defeat climate of purges targeting the ulema, and how this experience exposed the limits of armed struggle and paved the way for a strategic shift towards education. Darul Uloom Deoband, as the concrete institutional embodiment of this experience, is regarded as a madrasa model that reconstructed the Hanafi-Maturidi legacy along educational, civil-solidarity, and scholarly lines, and ensured its continuity even under colonial conditions. The study conducts a qualitative analysis by reading biographical narratives and institutional texts together through the lens of historical context and the relationship between discourse and function. Pressures after 1857-such as the weakening of the waqf system and the intensification of missionary activities-made madrasa-centred reorganisation imperative, while Deoband’s principles of financial and administrative autonomy enabled the production of scholarly authority without integration into colonial institutions, thereby establishing a social line that generated political effects. The study further emphasises that the language of solidarity articulated through the fatwa supporting the Ottoman Empire and the Rûdâd produced a horizon of belonging that transcended the psychology of defeat. In this respect, the article positions Darul Uloom Deoband not merely as an educational institution, but as a theo-political model of resistance that, under colonial conditions, reorganised the link between education, creed, and politics through the axis of institutional continuity. In conclusion, the study argues that this model-conceptualisable as “apolitical politics” under colonial rule-organised long-term resistance and ensured continuity for the tradition.
