Abstract
In the pre-Islamic period, the use of fragrances was a widespread custom amongst the Arabs. During this era, great importance was attached to the use of fragrances in daily life, and a trade in them flourished. When people experienced an unfortunate event, they would swear that they would not apply perfume, declaring that they would prefer a life without it, however difficult that might be. Fragrances attracted as much attention in the literature of the time as they did in everyday life. Poets would compose verses that explored the use of fragrances in their poetry. The use of fragrances, one of the important traditions of pre-Islamic social life, continued during the time of the Prophet Muhammad and was incorporated into many aspects of life. The Prophet’s example was evident not only in religious life but also in other areas of human concern. In his example, personal hygiene, cleanliness, courtesy and a well-groomed appearance were of great importance. Throughout his life, Prophet Muhammad strove to look his best and sought to set an example to those around him in this regard. He made efforts to ensure that every place where people gathered—particularly the environment and the streets—was clean and attractive. The use of pleasant fragrances, one of the key indicators of personal care, was personally practised and encouraged by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and has been continued as a Sunnah. A pleasant fragrance, which is an important indicator for people in both their personal and social lives, has also manifested itself in various ways in worship, family life, private life and professional life. It has also played a part in matters of love, communication, fellowship and diplomacy; it has been regarded as a means of giftgiving. This study discusses the place and importance of a pleasant fragrance in the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Furthermore, the benefits that a pleasant scent offers to people are highlighted.
Peygamber’in hayatında güzel kokunun yeri ve önemi anlatılmıştır. Ayrıca güzel kokunun insana sağladığı avantajlara işaret edilmiştir. Bu maksatla İslâm tarihi, siyer, hadis kaynakları başta olmak üzere günümüzde yapılan bazı çalışmalardan istifade edilmiştir.
