Abstract
The aim of this research is to examine the contribution of the renewed Religious Culture and Ethics (RCE) courses to students' self-development within the framework of the Türkiye Century Education Model (TCEM), based on student perceptions in light of quantitative data. This research is significant in that it reveals through empirical findings the impact of religious education provided in schools on students' self-development. The population of the study consists of students at middle and high school levels, the sample comprises a total of 423 students at 5th, 6th, 9th, and 10th grade levels studying in Hakkâri city center during the 2025- 2026 academic year. In this study conducted with a quantitative research design, the "Perception of Self-Education in RCE Courses Scale," developed to determine the contribution of RCE courses to students' self-development based on student perceptions, was used as the data collection instrument. The exploratory factor analysis results conducted to determine the construct validity of the scale showed that the scale has a six-factor structure and explains 70.41% of the total variance. The overall reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated as Cronbach's alpha = .823. Research findings revealed that students perceive RCE courses as a field of religious education that supports self-development in terms of self-awareness, moralvalue consciousness, spirituality, social self, self-actualization, and self-efficacy dimensions. Additionally, a positive and statistically significant relationship was identified between the perception of self-education related to RCE courses and self-esteem (r = .553; p < .01). The research results demonstrate that RCE courses conducted in accordance with TCEM contribute to students' self-development and, in this respect, provide empirical support to the religious education literature.
