Abstract

An examination of Dervish Selim Sirri’s Divan reveals that he drew upon archetypes that had become emblematic of classical Turkish poetry—such as the rival-stranger, the ascetic-mystic, the beloved, the lover, the dervish, the saint, the spiritual guide, and professional figures—as material for his poems. These elements feature in his poems, particularly in his ghazals and other poetic forms. This is significant in that it demonstrates that Sırrî, like other poets who produced works before him and adopted the classical style, continued this tradition. It is well known that these figures, whom we frequently encounter in almost every section of society, appear in various forms within the Divans. In classical Turkish poetry, the concept of the ‘type’ appears in various forms throughout the divans, depending on the poets’ preferences. With the use of these concepts, rhetorical devices such as allusion and simile are frequently observed in the poems. Various definitions exist for the concept of the ‘type’. A type is, in essence, a generalised representation of a person found in literary texts. A type appeals to society as a whole rather than to individual characteristics and shares similar traits with the society it represents. For a type is a type to the extent that it reflects the reality of society. This study aims to offer a fresh perspective on the concept of ‘type’ through an analysis of selected couplets from the Divan of Sırrî, one of the 19th-century Divan poets. The introduction will examine definitions and views regarding the concept of ‘type’, followed by a first section providing general information on the types mentioned above. In the second section, poems from Sırrî’s Divan in which these types appear will be presented; the definition and description of the types will be provided by first examining their usage in dictionaries and classical poetry, followed by the translation and explanation of the selected couplets into modern Turkish.
