Abstract

Boycotting is one of the key dynamics influencing consumer behavior in the modern world. Boycott, which is a means of expressing individuals' political, social or moral reactions, has motivations influenced by a wide variety of factors in its background. Religion fundamenally impacts individual lives and decision making processes. In this context, religious motivation stands out as an important issue to understand in boycotts. The problem addressed in this study is: “Can measurement tools be developed to measure religious motivations in boycotts?”. The aim of this study is to develop a valid and reliable scale that can measure religious motivations in boycotts. Although there have been studies on boycotts in the literature, there is no research specifically focused on developing a scale to measure religious motivations in boycotts. This study aims to fill a gap in the literature by concretely examining the religious motivations expressed for the boycott, thereby making an original contribution to future research. The study was conducted using a quantitative method. The study group was reached using a convenience sampling method. The initial 31-item version of the scale was administered to 231 individuals, and Exploratory Factor Analysis was performed. In the second stage, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted with a new study group of 250 people, resulting in the final version of the scale with a 7-item, single-factor structure. The mean age of the first study group was 37.11 (min. 19, max. 64, SD 10.975); the mean age of the second study group was 40.10 (min. 20, max. 63, SD 0.695). The scale is a 5 grade Likert-type scale, and the total score that can be obtained from the scale varies between 7 and 35. As a result of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the values of the scale were determined as follows; χ2/df=2.275; RMSEA=.072; GFI=.969; NFI=.990; AGFI=.928; CFI=. 994; IFI=.994; TLI=.990; SRMR=.0081; CR=.97; AVE=.87. It is seen that the scale can be applied to individuals over the age of 18 and has a valid and reliable structure.
